Nissan Altima Hybrid to make debut for 2007

The 2007 Nissan Altima Hybrid represents the Japanese carmakers first foray into the hybrid motorcar market. The vehicle made its public debut at the 2007 Model Orange County Autoshow in Anaheim on Thursday.

Nissans 2.5 litre engine lies at the heart of the Altima's propulsion system. It is attached to the front wheels by an electronic Continually Variable Transmission, or eCVT. Nissan originally released the CVT in 1992 in Japan to help reduce fuel usage, and plans to build 1 million CVT's annually by the end of next year.

The net output of the 2.5 litre engine and the electric assist hardware is a respectable 198 horsepower. Fuel economy is estimated at 41 MPG in the city and 36 MPG on highway trips.

Nissan's new hybrid has been certified to meet California emissions requirements and it will initially be available in 8 states: California, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, Rhode Island, Maine and New Jersey. These states are among the strongest markets for hybrid vehicles.

Built off of the same style and attitude platform as the next-generation 2007 Altima, the hybrid model offers the same styling cues and technological features as its gas-only sibling, but benefits owners with enhanced fuel economy and reduced emissions. This illustrates Nissans respect for the environment in a way that doesn't sacrifice the power and performance that the brand is known for.
